There are other significant moments in a person’s life that mark a change of public identity; these might include:

  • coming out as lesbian, gay or bisexual
  • changing legally recognised gender from male to female, or from female to male
  • becoming single after the break-up of a marriage or civil partnership

Coming out and having one’s gender identity recognised should be times of great joy and celebration; becoming single perhaps less so, depending upon the circumstances. In truth, however, each of these events may be a time both for celebration and for some aspect of mourning, as how you view yourself and how others view you may change, and your relationships, particularly family relationships, may change also.

A personally designed ceremony offers a safe container for all of your emotions – joyful and painful – as you step through a deep transition and celebrate entering a new chapter of your life. Such rites of passage may be held in a close gathering, with just yourself and those you most trust, or in a large celebration; what is most important is what is right for you.
